One of the most important alphabets in any
calligraphers "palette" -- Neuland provides the
mass and contrast on which the "flowers and vines"
of other alphabets can grow. We explore Neuland with
large metal pens and brushes, but also with drawing
tools, such as felt tips and pencils in order to
understand it's structure and to be able to explore
it's varieties and variations. Simple Neuland with
a flat edge angle for more beginning students,
more intermediate calligraphers can manipulate
the strokes to get the waisting that imitates the
famous typeface. The idea of no thicks and thins--
creating letters withmass, introduces other designs:
Eliza Vertical and “Flip-Flop” are some of mine, but
everyone comes up with a variation
Dry embossing a Neuland composition will allow
the participant to appreciate the positive and
negative spaces of this bedrock alphabet.
