Calligraphy and lettering in the fine arts is being explored in the most elaborate of illuminated bibles to the most personal of visual journals. As a Letterist I have explored lettering in my personal art as well as in the commercial realm.
I have an interest in literature and specifically poetry and write some of my own poetry, so it it inevitable that I'm inspired to create pieces of art with my own words, letters, gestures and marks as part of them.
This began as a straightforward, legible presentation and has evolved into abstractions and variations.
The manuscript book is a way to condense the surface and increase the portability of the art as well as giving the reader/observer a sense of discovery as they encounter the text or art page by page. Certain types of bookforms become three dimensional sculptures for display . Handmade boxes not only protect the fine art book , but can become part of the display. My manuscript books are both one-of-a-kind creations and short fine arteditions.
Now I am beginning to explore the sculptural aspect of the raised and recessed surface with something that is neither book nor broadside, as sort of paper or calligraphic sculpture. Please peruse my work and contact me with any comments; I appreciate your feedback.
